IGNOU holds Two Days National Seminar on the Use of Scientific and Technical Terminology in Science and Technology

 The School of Engineering and Technology, IGNOU in conjunction with Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, has organized a  two days National Seminar on the Use of Scientific and Technical Terminology in Science and Technology to introduce and popularize the use of authentic and standard terminology created by Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Ministry of Human Resource Development among the Central, Government and various affiliated universities and Colleges and Technical Institutions /Organizations.

 Professor Avanish Kumar, Chairman, Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology was the main speaker in the inaugural session from the Commission. He along with Prof. Satyakam, Pro-VC IGNOU who presided over the session, and Dr. Rakhi Sharma, Director, SoET inaugurated the two-days seminar.

Dr. Sanjay Agrawal, Associate Professor, IGNOU of SoET , Er. Jai Singh Rawat, Asst. Scientific Officer from CSTT, and Dr. Ashok Selwatker, Controlling Officer, CSTT were also present at the occasion.

Dr. Rakhi Sharma, Director, SoET in her welcome address gave an overview of the seminar highlighting the importance of the use of Hindi and other Indian languages in the science and technology education and research. She also provided an introduction to the programmes and other initiatives of the school.

Prof. Avanish Kumar, Chairman, CSTT in his address stressed upon the need of using own language for spread of not only science and technology but other subjects as well like medical, humanities, social sciences and agriculture science etc., He also informed that all the publications are available in e-book format at the CSTT website and the same can be accessed through the mobile app as well.

Elaborating the role of the commission, Prof. Avanish Kumar said “Till date, CSTT has standardized the terminology of about eight lakhs technical terms in different subjects and in different languages. Besides this, CSTT has published a large number of Definitional Dictionaries, Glossaries, Text-Books, Reference Materials and Monographs, Quarterly Journals named ‘Vigyan Garima Sindhu’ and ‘Gyan Garima Sindhu’ and many more works of similar nature”.

Prof. Satyakam, Pro-VC IGNOU in his presidential address urged the participating experts on the need to work at the grassroots for building the indigenous knowledge in science and technology and disseminating it using digital technology for its effective spread and making a difference. He cautioned that simple translation would not serve the purpose as this would amount to following the existing and not the development of new research and innovations. Which he said can only happen when you think, imagine, analyze and express in your own mother-tongue. And the commission’s role is important in building such an ecosystem in the country, he added.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Ashok Dr. Ashok Selwatker, Controlling Officer, CSTT explained the importance of scientific and technical terminologies in Indian languages. He also shared his views on scientific and technical book publishing in Indian languages.  

Shri Jai Singh Rawat, Assistant Scientific Officer, CSTT in his speech talked about the establishment of the Commission by the Presidential Order in 1961 to standardize the terminologies in Indian languages.

Shri Shiv Charan Sharma, Former Assistant Director, CSTT in the first technical session covered the complete process followed to generate new terminologies in the local languages with definitions and the issues thereof. Second session saw Shri R S Paroda, DRDO giving insightful lecturer on the technical and scientific terminologies.  Dr. Gajendra Pratap Singh, JNU and Dr. Neeraj Gupta, KIET; also presented on the topic.

The seminar has representation from the faculty of different colleges, polytechnic colleges, research organizations and engineers from Industries / PSUs / State Governments. Number of lecturers would be delivered by resource persons and the participants during the two days seminar.

The seminar is being coordinated by Dr. Sanjay Agrawal, Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Technology, IGNOU, and Officer in- charge from CSTT, MHRD: Er. Jai Singh Rawat, Asst. Scientific officer.
