Prof CRK Murthy




Chandu Radha Krishna Murthy (born 1959), M.A (Social Anthropology) and Ph.D (Education) working at Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE),  IGNOU since 1992 as- Lecturer in Distance Education (1992-1998), and as Reader in Distance Education (1998-2006) and currently  as Professor of Distance Education since July 2006 (till date).

  • Director, Research Unit from Feb. 2019 onwards.
As Professor at STRIDE mainly responsible for designing and organizing short term and long term staff development programmes in distance education system for academics and professionals of IGNOU, Directorates of DE/Correspondence Course Institutes, state open universities in India, and academics and administrators from institutes abroad (mainly from Asian and African regions).
  • From 1988 to 1992 he was involved in academic programme planning, design, and implementation of international projects (ODA, JICA, COL etc) at Planning and Development Division, IGNOU.
  • From 1981 to 1987 he was associated with training activities and research projects in areas of educational planning and management at NCERT and NIEPA, New Delhi.  As part of this research activity, he had extensively travelled many remote areas in various parts of India.  The major research projects undertaken during this period were:
  • Inventory management in engineering colleges.
  • Personnel structure in engineering colleges.
  • Management of educational change.
Academic Areas with Expertise : educational planning and management in general and open and distance higher education systems in particular; design and development of self-learning materials (SLMs) suitable to distance learners; student support services; planning and management.
Core Area of Expertise: Trainer in the area of ODL and as a Resource Person, he has planned, designed and conducted more than 300 workshops/training programmes in the Development of Self-Learning Materials (SLMs) and various other aspects of DE in India-at STRIDE, at DEIs and state open universities, and abroad (Ethiopia , Liberia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Singapore, Dubai, Newzealand and Papua New Guinea (PNG)). During these workshops, interacted with about 15,000 teachers and other practioners involved in ODL systems at higher education level.
Gained experience and expertise in Planning and organizing national and International Conferences in higher education in general and open and distance education in particular.
Completed the following research projects in distance education:

  • Educational profile of Mizoram:  IGNOU intervention
  • RGF scheme:  Report of the Internal Evaluation of PGDDE and MADE programmes:
  • Cost effectiveness and cost efficiency of selected programmes of IGNOU
The following research studies in progress:
  • Programme evaluation-an indepth study of selected IGNOU programmes
His further research interests include: programme evaluation, impact studies, training methodologies.
Coordinator of the following courses of M.A. (Distance Education) Programme offered by STRIDE-IGNOU:

Corporate Activities
  • Involved very actively in the corporate life of the University in various capacities such as Member of School of Boards of various Schools, Member of Committees on different aspects of ODL system etc.
  • As a Member of Distance Education Council (DEC) visiting Expert Team (consisting of DEC-UGC-AICTE Members), visited a few Universities/DE Institutions in the country.
  • Member UGC-DEB Recognition committee (2016-2018)
  • As Member and as ODL expert visited as UGC Expert Committee to a few universities.
  • Member, General Body, NIOS, New Delhi
Published articles/ chapters/ books various aspects related to distance higher education and general higher education.
From January 2001 to May 2002, he was associated with the editorial team of Indian Journal of Open Learning (IJOL) as Associate Editor; from 2006 as a Member, Editorial Advisory Board of IJOL. (2006-2008). Member Editorial Team from 2012 onwards.
