Dr. Moumita Das

Assistant Director


Dr. Moumita Das is Assistant Director at the National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education, IGNOU. She has been nominated as the Convener of the Institute’s Innovation Council (IIC) at IGNOU, an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development Innovation Cell (MIC) to shape the innovation ecosystem in the higher education institutions. She is one of the founder members of the InnovationClub@IGNOU – an initiative by IGNOU to foster a culture of innovation in the University, and has been its coordinator from 2016 to 2018. She organized several brainstorming and ideation sessions, talks, seminars and workshops in the Innovation Club. During this time the club expanded to the Regional Centres (RCs) of the university and 18 innovation clubs were established in the RCs all over India.

The main goal of her research is to advance the understanding of the need for innovations in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system and improve the quality of the educational services. She has also studied the perception of innovation among the teachers and students of the university. She has carried out research studies on the use of information communication technology (ICT) tools for designing innovative solutions for teaching-learning and skill development. Her work also includes the capacity development of the students, faculty and staff members to train them to be creative and innovative individuals. To nurture an environment of innovation in the university, she has conducted several events, seminars and training programmes on creativity and innovation, and the innovative use of ICT for the teachers, staff and students of IGNOU. She has been involved in offering innovative programmes and developing innovative learning resources in the university. She has designed and developed several ICT-based prototypes, such as audio books and a mobile app for the distance learners.

Before joining IGNOU, she was a Research Associate at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi and a Senior Editor at MacMillan. She completed her PhD from the CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, affiliated to University of Lucknow, and her post graduate and graduate degrees from University of Delhi. She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi.

She has authored seven books; one on the medicinal plant Chamomile, one on innovations in distance education, and five books that aim to pique the readers’ interest in things around us and prompt innovative thinking in them. She has written several chapters for the study materials of various Schools of Studies at IGNOU. She has written more than 50 research papers, reports and articles, and has presented her research papers in national and international conferences. To know more click here
