Dr Smita M Patil

Assistant Professor



Dr Smita M. Patil is currently Assistant Professor in the School of Gender and Development Studies at IGNOU. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her PhD thesis explores the intersections of caste and gender among the Dalit women in Maharashtra. She earned Masters and MPhil in Political Science from Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

She was also a doctoral fellow at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi. She was recipient of ‘The Australia-India Council Junior Fellowship’ for the research on ‘Politics of Race, Caste and Gender: Exploring the Social Spaces of Indigenous Women in Australia and Dalit Women from India’ at National Centre for Australian Studies of Monash University, 2011-2012.

She contributed papers in international as well as national conferences on gender, caste, social movements, literature, policies, education and representation .Her area(s) of interest are: social theories and gender dimensions of nineteenth century Maharashtrian politics.

Her recent publications are ' Revitalising Dalit Feminism: Towards Reflexive, Anti-Caste Agency of Mang and Mahar Women in Maharashtra'(Economic & Political Weekly, 2013),'Violence of Silence: Brahmanic Media Constructions of Caste and Gender'(Women’s Link, Quarterly Journal, 2011),'Transcending Orbits of Dalit Women’s Minor literature'(Orient Blackswan, 2010.)

Her forth-coming writings are on Re-thinking Caste, Gender and Sexuality in Dalit Writings, Citizenship and Gender, Indian Feminism and so on.
