Prof Anu Aneja


Prof Anu Aneja completed her Bachelor's degree in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Master's and Doctorate degree in Comparative Literature (French and Indian women writers) from Penn State University (1989).

She has taught for several years at Ohio Wesleyan University, in the School of Humanities & Classics, where she received the Rebecca Brown Professor of Literature award. She has taught courses in contemporary world literatures and women's studies. She has held visiting research positions at University of California, Berkeley and at University of California, Santa Cruz, both in California. She has also taught in the French Centre at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She held the Beatrice B. Maines fellowship for research in women's studies at the Univ. of California, Berkeley.

Her research and teaching interests include postmodern and postcolonial literatures, women writers and feminist perspectives on mothering. She has published widely in all of these areas, and has translated Hélène Cixous' French play L'Indiade into Hindustani.  Her most recent publication, “Mapping the Mother’s Body between France and India” appeared in Mothering & Psychoanalysis in 2014 (Demeter Press). 

Prof. Anu Aneja joined IGNOU in 2005 as Director, School of Continuing Education. She is currently in the School of Gender & Development Studies where she coordinates the MA programme in Women's & Gender Studies, and the PG Diploma programme in Women's & Gender Studies, along with other faculty. Previously, she has held additional charge as Director, Inter-University Consortium.
