Prof Chandrashekhar Bhat


Chandrashekhar Bhat (Ph.D. Delhi University) has been a Professor of Eminence at the Department of Sociology, Tezpur University till recently. He was formerly a Professor of Sociology and the Founder-Director of the Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora at the University of Hyderabad. He was initiated into ‘diaspora studies’ at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he carried out a post-doctoral project on Indian Ethnic Associations during the tenure of the ‘Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship’. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora (1996), the first ever UGC sponsored academic and research institution in India devoted to diaspora studies. Besides designing and teaching courses on diaspora studies at the graduate level, he has guided several research students specializing in the domain of Indian diaspora for Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees. He has out a UGC funded Major Research Project on Indian Diaspora, Religion and Transnational Networks.Prof. Bhat has published several papers on diaspora studies in various journals and edited books, besides three books on migration, ethnicity and development.
