IGNOU-UNESCO Science Olympiad in August

 The Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU’s) Raman Chair for Science Education, UNESCO, Department of Science and Technology (Govt. of India) and Intel together will be organising IGNOU-UNESCO Science Olympiad 2011 in nearly 100 centres all over India and about 30 centres in all other SAARC nations on 21st August 2011.

 

All students currently enrolled in the 11th standard/ class of India and equivalent in other SAARC nations and having passed with an aggregate of 60 percentor B grade and above in their 10th standard/class examination are eligible for the Olympiad.

 

“The competition is modeled on a 2-Tier basis. The objective type Tier I test for this year will take place in August this year. It will be based on the 9th and 10th class CBSE syllabi of Science and Mathematics. All the students with the above qualification go for on-line registration of the Tier I test. They shall pay a fee of Rs.100 either by a demand draft or credit card (for Indians) and must have their digitised passport size photograph. The last date for registration is July 31, 2011,” said Prof. P. T. Manoharan, Raman Chair Professor for Science education at IGNOU.

 

The competition is of international standard and is intended to promote the importance and excitement of basic sciences and to bring in scientific cooperation between and its neighbours.

 

At the end of Tier I test, top 1000 students will receive merit certificates indicating the percentile of their performance and the topmost 40 from all countries will be invited to IGNOU, Delhi for writing Tier II tests and for receiving their medals and cash prizes. At the end of Tier II test, on the basis of total performance, 5 top rankers and 4 branch-wise (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) toppers will receive further awards and recognitions in a function to be organized on 14th November, 2011.
