Dr. Vasishta appointed honorary director of the Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre

Dr. Madan M. Vasishta, a professor at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, has been appointed as Director of the Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre (ISLRTC) at IGNOU.
Dr. Vasishta begain his research in the Indian Sign Language (ISL) in 1975 and has published four dictionaries on ISL's regional varieties.
Dr. Vasishta will provide guidance in establishing the ISLRTC. He will work closely with the staff to ensure all goals established by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment are followed.
Vice Chancellor Prof VN Rajasekharan Pillai has given Dr. Vasishta the go ahead to implement this historical project which will result in enhancing educational opportunities for the deaf.
Dr. Vasishta was born in Himachal Pradesh and became deaf at the age of 11. He went to US in 1967 and after receiving his Ph.D in special education administration worked as a Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of schools in several states.
He has authored six books and scores of articles in the areas of deaf education, sign language and bilingual education.
