03 September, 2013

Indira Gandhi National Open University, School of Translation Studies is organizing one day National Consultation on “People’s Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI), Community Ethnography & Eco-cultural Mapping”. The inaugural programme will be held in the Convention Centre of IGNOU on 6th September, 2013 at 10.30 a.m. Prof. D.P. Pattnaik, Founder Director, Central Institute of Indian Languages will be the Guest of Honour and the Keynote Address will be delivered by Dr. K.K. Chakravarty, Chancellor, NEUPA & President, Lalit Kala Akademi who also served as Secretary in the Govt. of India. Prof. M. Aslam, VC, IGNOU will Chair the session.

The programme will aim at discussing the work done under the PLSI. The PLSI is a result of the hard work of about 3000 language workers all over the country who worked for four years to prepare their representatives in different Indian languages. In this sense, it is a historic event because it is a second linguistic survey after the first linguistic survey by George Abraham Grierson. It is a kind of reality check of status of different languages in the country. It will be followed by two stages of Community Generated Ethnographies & Eco-cultural Mapping. The meeting will discuss these two future projects as well.

The meeting will be attended by different representatives of Indian languages from the country. The deliberations will be extremely helpful in terms of repository of data and knowledge about languages, communities and cultures.
