The Postgraduate Diploma in Women’s and Gender Studies is on offer from July 2012.   Women’s & Gender Studies are significant areas of academic inquiry today.  In India, and worldwide, several universities and colleges are now offering programmes in these areas at all levels.  There is an urgent need to address issues related to gender questions in India from an academic perspective through the dissemination of the growing body of knowledge already available in these areas.  The programme is meant for learners with an undergraduate degree in any discipline who may be interested in acquiring conceptual, theoretical and analytical knowledge in the areas of women’s and gender studies.  The courses are intended to equip students with foundational knowledge in the discipline to prepare them for relevant employment opportunities.
 
After completing this programme successfully, learners will be able to pursue their careers in higher studies and research, work with Non-Profit Organizations/Non-Governmental Organizations, both at National and International level, work as advocacy agents for national and international Government organizations/institutions, as well as pursue careers in specialized areas like Mass Media, Publishing Houses, Special Column Writing and Editing, and Gender Training Programmes.   
 
Programme Objectives
The programme aims to enable learners to:
  • Enhance and update their knowledge about concepts and theories in women’s and gender studies;
  • Acquire inter-disciplinary analytical and critical perspectives so that they may be able to examine knowledge across disciplines from a gender perspective;
  • Learn about the history of women’s movements and movements based on gendered identities, and contributions of individuals and groups in improving the status of women and other marginalized groups;
  • Develop an understanding of the intersections of gender with class, caste, ethnicity, race and sexuality;
  • Obtain knowledge about theoretical and critical perspectives on issues of gender and power, gendered bodies and sexualities, and gender perspectives in literature, arts and media.
