Dr. Arun Banik

Dr. Arun Banik is the Director of National Centre for Disability Studies under Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.

He is an expert in the field of Speech and Hearing and Disability Rehabilitation for persons with disabilities. He has been closely associated with the rehabilitation training programme, research activities for the multiple handicapped with speech and hearing problems since last two decades in India.

He is also associated with a number of NGOs working in respect of various aspects such as education, vocational training, material development, research and other rehabilitation activities for the multiple handicapped people with absolute devotion, commitment and motivation. Thus, he has also closely seen the working situations of the gross root Non-Govt. Organisation through his professional interaction in India.

Dr. Banik has gone through the professional training programmes at All India Institute of Speech Hearing, Mysore in BSc (Speech & Hearing) and MSc (Speech & Hearing) from Mysore University. He had also undergone a specialized training programme in the Faculty of Education leading to Postgraduate Degree i.e. Master of Science (MS) in Paediatrics Habilitation from the University of Manchester (England) which is equivalent to M Ed (Hearing Impairment) degree. In addition, Dr Banik has also possessed the degree of Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (Personnel Management) from Pondicherry Central University in 2002. Finally he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) from the faculty of Psychology at Utkal University, Bhubneshwar.

With regard to his administrative experience, during his professional career, held the responsibility as In-charge Assistant Director at the Regional Centre of NIHH at Bhubaneswar and additionally served as Head of the Department of Audiology, Education, Case History and Counselling Section / Departments, and also In-charge of Composite Regional Centre for the Persons with Disabilities (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India) Srinagar (J & K).

Dr. Arun Banik has rendered services both in non-government hospitals and government Institutes, over the last 25 years. He was attached to India’s most premier Institutes Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India for 23 years. He started his career as Clinical Assistant, Audiology and Speech Pathology department at Regional Centre of AYJNIHH, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. In 1991 he was appointed as Lecturer in Audiology and Speech Pathology and served the Institute about 8 years. Further, he joined as Reader in Speech & Hearing and posted as Head, Material Development Department at AYJNIHH, Mumbai in 1995 and served for 15 years before he joined as Director at National Centre for Disability Studies (NCDS).

He is a regular faculty member for all the rehabilitation courses recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India. He is a recognised teacher for the University of Mumbai, Maharasthra University of Health Sciences, Osmania University, Calcutta University, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education, Chandigarah, Pandit Ravi Shankar Shuka University, Raipur, Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, Ramkrishna Mission Deemed University, Coimbatore , Tamilnadu and many more in the country. Additionally, he is also a recognised guide for various Master degree and Ph D programmes in many Universities and as well as the Mumbai University, Mumbai and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik.

Around 20 scientific research articles of Dr Banik have already been published in various Indian Professional Journals. He attended a number of professional conferences at National and International level, presented scientific research papers in the conferences in the area of disability rehabilitation. By virtue of professional & administrative acumen, he is actively involved in various academic and professional activities and dedicated towards the rehabilitation process and various welfare programmes for persons with disabilities in India.
