The Post-Graduate Certificate in Geoinformatics (PGCGI) is a continuing education programme that intends to familiarise learners with the basic concepts of geoinformatics technologies. Geoinformatics technologies deal with acquisition, storage, processing and dissemination of spatial information. Geoinformatics is an emerging field and demand for geoinformatics professionals is increasing by the day due to its application potential in several fields such as rural and urban planning, environmental monitoring, natural resources management, management of natural hazards and disasters, etc. This programme is built around concepts and skills at the basic level to make it easy for a learner who wishes to understand how geoinformatics can be put to practical use.
Objectives of the programme are to:
- provide theoretical knowledge and hands-on training to the learners in the basics of geoinformatics technologies,
- acquaint learners with the use of geoinformatics technology in analysing spatial data, and
- widen opportunities of learners for higher studies and developing careers in different sectors of employment involving geoinformatics.
This programme would be helpful for the interested learners to develop skills in this field for further studies and also to pursue a career in government organisations, industries and educational institutes in the field of natural resources management, natural hazards and disaster management, environment management, urban and rural planning, business applications and geospatial education.

- Working professionals with little or no exposure to geoinformatics
- Graduates interested in developing skills to work with geospatial data.

Counselling
Counsellors will be available at each study centre according to a schedule made by the coordinator of the study centre. The counsellor is there to facilitate the learner’s self-study. Thus, if there is a problem that a learner faces while studying, s/he can ask the counsellor for help in sorting it out. However, it may be noted that the counsellor will not give lectures.
Practical
Since this programme comprises experimental work (/practicals), candidates should take admission in this progrmame only when they are sure that they
- can come to the nearest study centre for attending practical sessions for the prescribed duration
- have access to computers to carry out/ perform practical exercises at home themselves, and
- also have access to internet at home or internet café to download the software and data as prescribed in the practical course and communicate with the counselors, coordinators, etc.
“Note that at present there are study centers at thirteen (13) locations across India i.e. Aizwal (in Mizoram-under RC Aizwal), Bhubaneswar (in Odisha-under RC Bhubaneswar), Dehradun (in Uttarakhand-under RC Dehradun), Durg (in Chhattisgarh – under RC Raipur), Gangtok (in Sikkim-under RC Gangtok), Gauhati (in Assam under RC Guwahati), New Delhi (under RC Delhi-1), Pune (in Maharashtra- under RC Pune), Rampur (in U.P.-under RC Aligarh), Srinagar (in J&K-under RC Srinagar), Thiruvanthapuram (in Kerala- under RC Trivandrum) and Tikamgarh (in M.P.-under RC Jabalpur). More study centres would be added in due course of time.”
The learners should keep a photocopy of any papers, reports or assignments submitted to the study centre or the university.
