Indira Gandhi National Open University has launched a Bachelors programme in Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (BAMSME) for the youth of the country. The programme will cater to the present needs of young entrepreneurs and will aid in developing their knowledge and skills to establish a business venture. The programme will also aid in increasing job opportunities among the youth in India. The School of Vocational Education and Training at IGNOU has taken the initiative to offer the programme in January 2025 session. The B.A Micro Small and Medium Enterprises programme is for 10+2 passouts. It comprises 120 credits.

IGNOU Alumnus to Celebrate 10 Years of "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" by Scaling Australia's Highest Peak
On the occasion of the successful completion of 10 years of the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" scheme, launched in 2015 under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister of India to combat female foeticide, promote girl child education, prohibit child marriage, and empower women, a remarkable tribute is being made by Mr. Surya Pratap Mishra, Uttar Pradesh Government State Youth Awardee (2022).
Under his "Global Campaign Tiranga," with sponsorship support from the State Bank of India and Finitra Company, Mr. Mishra is set to climb the highest peak of the Australian continent. This expedition aims to celebrate the grand success of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, which has significantly contributed to women's empowerment and child protection across India.
The Australian Mountaineering Expedition was flagged off by Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, in the esteemed presence of Dr. Alok Chaube, Registrar, IGNOU; Prof. Nandini Sinha Kapur, Director, SOITS, IGNOU; and other dignitaries.

IGNOU and India Meteorological Department Inaugurate Automatic Weather Station at IGNOU Maidangarhi Campus
In an event held on 5th December 2024, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Earth Sciences, GoI inaugurated the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) installed at IGNOU Headquarters at Maidangarhi Campus, New Delhi.
The Automatic Weather Station (AWS) automatically collects meteorological observations and sends them to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The meteorological parameters recorded include wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, rainfall and maximum and minimum temperature. There is no AWS in this part of Delhi so this installation is expected to provide weather related information that could be useful for not only the researchers but also to the common public for getting weather related information.
Dr. Mrintunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD was the Chief Guest and IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Uma Kanjilal presided over the event. Dr. Rahul Saxena, Dr. Sanjiv Tyagi and Dr. Vivek Dhawan, Scientists from IMD were also present. Dr. Alok Choube, Registrar Admin, IGNOU, Directors of various Schools of studies, Centers, Heads of divisions, Senior Faculty members of all the disciplines of the School of Sciences and other officials and Dr. S.P. Rout, Deputy Registrar, Admin. were also present on the occasion. Officials from Regions Centres also joined the event online.
Chief Guest, Dr. Mritunjay Mahapatra, Director General, India Meteorological Department, MoES gave a historical account of the weather and climate services in India. He mentioned that since its founding in 1875, IMD has been offering weather and climatic services to the public and specialized agencies through a state-of-art network of weather observatories. He elaborated how such services are useful in numerous sectors such as agriculture, health, environment, etc. and highlighted achievements of India in the field.
Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU appreciated the move to collaborate with IMD and how the weather and climate information could be beneficial to many stakeholders and the local community. She also emphasized exploring possibilities of developing academic programmes on relevant themes.
Prof. Meenal Mishra, Director, School of Sciences outlined how the installation of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at IGNOU Headquarters could be useful to IGNOU Faculty members, researchers and students from various Schools for disciplines such as geology, geoinformatics, geography, environmental sciences, health science, etc. in their project work and research involving meteorological and environmental data. Besides, it could also be useful for awareness purposes to the local community.
The IMD team also visited the Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC) which was demonstrated by Dr. K.D. Prasad, Director, EMPC and Dr. Jatinder Jeet Kaur, Producer. Dr. Mahapatra expressed his interest in collaborating with EMPC.

While inaugurating the Week Long to celebrations of the National Startup Day-2025, Prof. Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU said that a number of IGNOU students are coming forward to set up their startups in different fields and further she said that they have great potential for contributing towards Viksit Bharat@2047.
On this occasion, she gave away the prizes to the winners of the Viksit Bharat @2047 competitions including idea competition, essay writing competition and poster competition-2024.
Dr. Arvind Ranade, Director, National Innovation Foundation, Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India delivered a keynote address on Igniting the Young Minds Towards Viksit Bharat@2047 focusing on innovation and startup. He said that it is not difficult for our country to become a developed country where more that 65 percent of the population is under 35 years of age. He highlighted the importance of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in India's Growth Story.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in collaboration with its Regional Centres, is celebrating the National Startup Day-2025 by organizing various kinds of activities over a week during January 13-17, 2025. IGNOU Commemorates Constitution Day with Preamble Reading and Special Lecture
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) observed Constitution Day with a series of events emphasizing the enduring values of India’s Constitution. The celebrations were led by Professor Uma Kanjilal, Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, who guided the university employees in a collective recitation of the Preamble of the Constitution of India. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Kanjilal urged everyone to embrace the essence of the Preamble and internalize its deeper significance, underscoring its role as a guiding force for the nation.
A special lecture was delivered by Padma Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, highlighting the foundational principles of the Constitution. He emphasized that there is no conflict between Fundamental Rights and the Directive Principles of State Policy, which together constitute the soul of the Constitution.

Speaking at the IGNOU Foundation Day function, the Hon'ble Minister stated, "The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a transformative step towards building an inclusive, equitable, and globally competitive education system in India. Its focus on flexible, multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and creativity aligns perfectly with the mission of open universities like IGNOU. The NEP’s emphasis on digital and distance learning reflects the growing need for accessible and resilient education, which is vital in today’s rapidly changing world."
"The role of IGNOU in promoting regional languages and translating self-learning materials is crucial for ensuring inclusivity and reaching students from diverse backgrounds. Technology has become a cornerstone of modern education, and IGNOU has been a pioneer in leveraging digital platforms, AI-driven tools, and virtual classrooms. This commitment has enabled students to access quality education at their own pace and convenience," he added.
The Minister highlighted the importance of embracing emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Augmented Reality. "IGNOU, as a key contributor to the Government of India's SWAYAM initiative with over 250 courses, must continue to focus on enhancing digital literacy, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary studies. By doing so, the University will equip students with the skills needed for the 21st century and prepare them for the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution," he concluded.
Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Chairman, AICTE highlighted IGNOU's strong ICT infrastructure, which includes online courses, teleconferencing, SWAYAM, and SWAYAM Prabha, enabling the University to serve a wide range of learners, from youth and women to marginalized groups like elderly population, Divyangjans, transgenders, and even jail inmates. With its commitment to inclusivity, IGNOU caters to diverse educational needs, making quality education accessible to all sections of society, he added.
He further said that aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, IGNOU’s focus on delivering a student-centric, multidisciplinary, and digitally enhanced education positions it well to contribute to the vision of a Viksit Bharat@2047.
Prof. Uma Kanjilal, VC IGNOU, expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest and the AICTE Chairman for their presence on this significant day in the university's journey. In her address on the occasion, she underscored IGNOU's commitment to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through enhanced emphasis on fostering a comprehensive approach to education which includes prioritizing holistic development, promoting digital inclusiveness, and ensuring continuous professional growth for the IGNOU faculty.
On the 39th Foundation Day of the University, the Hon’ble Minister launched the Bachelor of Arts (Education) program in ODL mode, introduced by the School of Education, IGNOU.
During the event, IGNOU students were honored for their innovative ideas and entrepreneurial initiatives. The university also recognized its best-performing Regional Centers, Divisions, and other departments for their outstanding contributions.
Additionally, the Hon’ble Minister unveiled several books authored by IGNOU faculty members and research scholars, further enriching the university’s academic achievements.

इंदिरा गांधी राष्ट्रीय मुक्त विश्वविद्यालय (IGNOU) ने मैदान गढ़ी स्थित अपने मुख्यालय में एक प्रभावशाली समारोह के साथ अपना 39वां स्थापना दिवस मनाया। इस अवसर पर मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में शिक्षा मंत्रालय के माननीय राज्य मंत्री डॉ. सुकांत मजूमदार उपस्थित रहे तथा एआईसीटीई के अध्यक्ष प्रो. टी. जी. सीताराम ने स्थापना दिवस व्याख्यान दिया।
डॉ. सुकांत मजूमदार, माननीय शिक्षा राज्य मंत्री तथा एआईसीटीई के अध्यक्ष प्रो. टी. जी. सीताराम ने बाबा साहेब अंबेडकर कन्वेंशन सेंटर, इग्नू मुख्यालय में इग्नू के छात्रों द्वारा किए गए नवाचारों को प्रदर्शित करने वाली एक प्रदर्शनी का भी उद्घाटन किया। माननीय मंत्री ने छात्रों से बातचीत की तथा उनके विचारों में गहरी रुचि ली।
इग्नू स्थापना दिवस समारोह में बोलते हुए माननीय मंत्री ने कहा, "राष्ट्रीय शिक्षा नीति (एनईपी) 2020 भारत में समावेशी, न्यायसंगत और वैश्विक रूप से प्रतिस्पर्धी शिक्षा प्रणाली के निर्माण की दिशा में एक परिवर्तनकारी कदम है। लचीली, बहु-विषयक शिक्षा, आलोचनात्मक सोच और रचनात्मकता पर इसका ध्यान इग्नू जैसे मुक्त विश्वविद्यालयों के मिशन के साथ पूरी तरह से मेल खाता है। डिजिटल और दूरस्थ शिक्षा पर एनईपी का जोर सुलभ और लचीली शिक्षा की बढ़ती आवश्यकता को दर्शाता है, जो आज की तेजी से बदलती दुनिया में महत्वपूर्ण है।"
"क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं को बढ़ावा देने और स्व-शिक्षण सामग्री का अनुवाद करने में इग्नू की भूमिका समावेशिता सुनिश्चित करने और विविध पृष्ठभूमि के छात्रों तक पहुँचने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है। प्रौद्योगिकी आधुनिक शिक्षा की आधारशिला बन गई है, और इग्नू डिजिटल प्लेटफ़ॉर्म, एआई-संचालित टूल और वर्चुअल कक्षाओं का लाभ उठाने में अग्रणी रहा है। इस प्रतिबद्धता ने छात्रों को अपनी गति और सुविधा के अनुसार गुणवत्तापूर्ण शिक्षा प्राप्त करने में सक्षम बनाया है," उन्होंने कहा।

कार्यक्रम के दौरान, इग्नू के छात्रों को उनके नवीन विचारों और उद्यमशीलता की पहल के लिए सम्मानित किया गया। विश्वविद्यालय ने अपने सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करने वाले क्षेत्रीय केंद्रों, प्रभागों और अन्य विभागों को उनके उत्कृष्ट योगदान के लिए सम्मानित किया।
