Introduction

The M.A. Programme in Sociology aims to:

  1. Provide a thorough grounding in advanced sociological knowledge, including classical and contemporary theories, research methodologies, and perspectives, to support a wide range of learners, including those in remote and underserved areas.
  2. Equip learners to understand and analyze rapid social transformations influenced by globalization, ICT expansion, evolving knowledge systems, shifts in development strategies, and global security threats.
  3. Develop skills to critically apply sociological theories, concepts, and research methods in understanding complex social processes and issues in contemporary society.
  4. Examine the state of sociology in India with a focus on development issues affecting large population segments, including urbanization, migration, education, and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
  5. Explore the changing roles of religion, urbanization, education, diasporas, and transnational communities, and their impacts on social structures and individual lives.
  6. Develop an understanding of the interconnections between emerging social processes and the global, regional, and local contexts in which they occur, preparing learners to address current and future social challenges.

Objective

After completing this programme, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply sociological theories, concepts, and research methods to understand and interpret complex social changes and emerging societal issues.
  2. Analyze the rapid social transformations driven by globalization, ICT advancements, shifting development paradigms, as well as responses like local resistance and grassroots activism among marginalized communities.
  3. Critically assess challenges in the development process, particularly those affecting large population segments in India and other regions.
  4. Examine the changing roles and impacts of religion, urbanization, education, climate change, diasporas, and transnational communities within contemporary society.
  5. Understand and evaluate the dynamics of emerging social processes and their interconnectedness with global, regional, and local contexts.
