In this course we have presented 3 blocks comprising 13 units. Block 1 is on Social Work Profession and Education. In this block, we have tried to present the historical development of social work education and practice in various continents as well as social work as a profession including its values, principles and ethics. There is also one unit on social work education through distance learning.
The second and third blocks deal with social work concepts and methods. While the three primary methods namely : social case work, social group work and community work in social work are deliberated upon in the second block, the third block deals with the secondary methods of social work namely social action, social work research and social welfare administration. There is also one unit on Generalist practice in this block.
Taken together the unit contents in the above mentioned three blocks will provide you sufficient understanding about the Origin and Development of Social Work across the globe along with basic understanding of its concepts

In this course MSW-002, you will be learning about origin and development of social work in India. In other words we have tried to develop a full course on the history of social work in India. There are four blocks in the course comprising 19 units which have been prepared by the best of experts on the subject. Block 1 deals with the evolution of social work practices in India. This block speaks about the initiatives made by the state (including local leaders, kings, state governments as well as the national government). It also deals with the contribution made by renowned individuals, non-government organizations and social movements. Block 2 is on religion and social work in Indian Context. When we learned about the liistory of social work in western world, most of the focus was on the values, teachings and charitable works of Christian religion. When we talk about history of social work in Indian context and the contribution of religion, we have to learn about contribution made by various religions in India. Therefore, we have included one chapter each on Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Christianity from Indian context. While discussing each chapter we have tried to highlight three aspects of each religion namely, historical background, basic teachings, values and ethics of the religion, social welfare programmes initiated by each religion and the linkages between social values and social welfare activities of the religion to social work practices. Block 3 on Gandhian concepts related to social work. Mahatma Gandhi did provide a model of attaining goals through the principles of Non-violence which has been recognized world over. When we talk about history of social work in India we cannot ignore the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi. It is an established fact that many of the values of Gandhian model of social service for social development are inherent in professional social work. Block 4 deals with professional work in independent India. In this block we have dealt with growth of social work education and training, literature of social work developed in India, involvement of social workers in national development as well as career prospects in professional work in India. The above mentioned 19 units will provide you adequate information and knowledge about the history of social work in India from various angles which has a strong base for the social development sector of the country.

The course MSW – 005 comprise of 4 Blocks and gives an overview on theoretical understanding about social work practicum. This course is very unique as compared to the courses offered under MSW programme in the conventional system. In Block 1, we have presented the basic information on social work practicum i.e. its concepts, importance, models, national as well as international scenario, and its applicability in the open and distance learning (ODL) system. Block 2 focuses on roles and expectations of various stakeholders involved in social work practicum. It has been extremely difficult for the social work profession to establish itself in developing countries like India due to the problem associated with voluntary work versus paid work. The most important task, therefore, for the professional is to make sure that clients understand the services they receive from professional social workers and not confuse it with services of other people. Thus, roles and expectations of people involved in social work process are important. Block 3 is on “Field Work Supervision”. Supervision is part of educational practicum. It is generally defined as the relationship between a student or subordinate and supervisor where the later oversees the development of the student throughout the practicum experience. This block has articulated various issues such as models, environmental aspects in social work supervision, supportive functions in supervision, and field practicum supervision in distance learning mode. The last block discusses social work practicum in various settings. It has incorporated specific roles of social workers in individual, family and community settings, medical and psychiatric settings, corporate sectors, donor agencies and NGO sector. By and large, all the units discussed in the above mentioned four blocks will give you a clear understanding on various components of social work practicum and its application in distance learning mode

In the course on social case work you studied about working with individuals. The course “SocialGroup Work:Working withGroups” willorient youto another primary method of social work, that is, “Social Group Work”. Social Group Work is an important method of Social Work. Since people in the society live and work through various group, the problems arising as a result of social malfunctions can be better addressed by working in a group. This course comprises of four blocks dealing with different aspects of group work. The first block is on “Introduction to Social Group Work” which talks about group, relationship between casework and group work, how group work evolved and its advantages and disadvantages in social work practice. The second block namely, “Group Work Dynamics” discusses the theories related to group work and the various models of practicing it. You will learn the factors affecting group formation, the tasks of a group worker and the principles governing group work practice. In the third block you will learn about “Leadership and Skills Development in Social Group Work”. This block elaborates on the skills and styles of leadership, how is it helpful in group work practice, what are some of the techniques of group work and relevance of life skills education in social group work. You will also have an understanding about program planning in social group work factors affecting it, and the principles and relevance of recording in social group work. The fourth block is on “Social Group Work in Different Settings” which will introduce the learners to the concept of self help groups and also enable you to explore different settings where social group work is relevant, and identify the role of a social worker in a group. Thus the four blocks of this course on “Social Group Work: Working with Groups” present a comprehensive idea about one of the primary methods of social work which is very important in social work intervention in any society

In this course on ‘Community Organization Management for Community Development’ there are four blocks. Block 1 deals with the concept of community and community development. In this block we also discuss about the meaning, nature and characteristics features of urban, rural and tribal communities, place of community work within social work practice and community development programmes in rural, tribal and urban areas. This Block will also give you an understanding of the concept of accountability and its importance in community development work. Block 2 is on community organization for community development. Apart from explaining the values, purpose and assumptions underlying community organization this block also outline the philosophy and history of community organization in the USA, UK and India. In this block we also discuss about similarities, differences and relationship between community organization and other methods of social work. The block also discusses about models of community organization, concept and dimensions of power and the relevance of power in community organization practice as well as impact of globalization on contemporary communities and community practice. Block 3 deals with social action for community development. Apart from discussing concept, history, scope and relevance of social action, this block also deals with various models of social action, strategies and tactics in social action, values, ethics and principles of social action. Block 4 is on social administration. In this block we discuss about concept, history, nature, scope, functions and principles of social welfare administration. Types and characteristics of social welfare organization have also been discussed under this block. Social Welfare administration is the execution of the programmes, schemes and projects meant to achieve the goals delineated in the social policy. The discussion and deliberation in this course is very important for social work students because we have covered several important topics that are needed for a social work student in the field of social work. Although all these topics require much more discussion, due to the limitations prescribed for a course, we have to cut short the length of the course material by making a presentation of the basics.
