Introduction

The PhD in Distance Education (PHDDE) programme is offered by the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) under the guidance of the Doctoral Research Committee and the School Board of the School of Education (SOE) at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

A key component of the programme involves coursework, which comprises at least 16 credits and includes the compulsory 2-credit course on Research and Publication Ethics (RPE001), a requirement across all disciplines as prescribed by UGC since 2020. Other mandatory courses include ‘Research Methodology’ (Course Code: RDE-101; 8 Credits) and ‘Context and Concern in Distance Education’ (Course Code: RDE-102; 4 Credits). Apart from these two courses, students are also offered the course: ‘Information and Communication Technology’ (Course Code: RDE-103; 4 Credits). This coursework is conducted at the IGNOU Campus in New Delhi during the first six months of admission, with a compulsory 80% attendance.

The Ph.D programme is designed to promote systemic research aimed at enhancing the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system. This involves investigating issues related to access, equity, quality, and affordability, evaluating distance education programmes, and improving employability and entrepreneurial skills. The programme operates in strict compliance with the UGC Regulations and IGNOU's own research ordinances and regulations.
