History/ Milestones
Human resource development in forms of continuous staff training and continuing professional development assumes prime significance in any system of distance education. Keeping this in view, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) had established a Division of Distance Education (DDE) right from the inception of the university. The DDE was upgraded to a Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) in 1993, with support received from COL, Canada, as a nodal agency for training and research in distance education in the South Asian region. STRIDE was entrusted with the responsibility of staff development, research and development, and system development in distance education.
In 2022, STRIDE was recognized as a HRDC equivalent center and subsequently conducted many programmes for teachers and academics. These included the National Professional Development Programme on “Implementation of NEP-2020 for University and College Teacher” in which 14 batches participated from 2022 to June 2023 and around 30,000 teachers were certified. STRIDE also developed a 2-credit Swayam Course under MoE’s National NEP-PDP for Administrators and General Practitioners of higher education which ran 14 batches from Feb 2023 to May 2024 in which 7434 teachers were certified.
In 2024 , MoE-UGC approved IGNOU as a Malaviya Mission Teacher training Centre (MMTTC), which was then housed in STRIDE. Subsequently 46 programmes have been conducted till December 2025 in which over 5459 teachers have been certified.
STRIDE has been offering its long term capacity building programmes at the national and international spheres through its PGDDE, MADE, PGDDEOL, MADEOL and erstwhile PGDEL programmes. Its PGDDE/MADE programmes have, in the past, been offered in above 20 Commonwealth countries. These programmes are offered through ODL, Online Modes and SWAYAM also. STRIDE is also offering Ph.D in Distance Education.
