Introduction

The Certificate of Competency in Power Distribution (for Electrical Technicians) (CCPD), programme has been developed by the School of Engineering & Technology, IGNOU in collaboration with the Ministry of Power under IGNOU-PFC (MoP) Project.

Training for on job employees for upgrading their skills and need of skilled fresh recruits/manpower with required skill and knowledge is the critical need of continuously growing power industry to enhance systemic efficiency and deliver quality power to the satisfaction of beneficiaries.

This programme has launched to address the general concerns and issues in the electricity distribution sector, and inculcate awareness and exchange good practices amongst the workforce engaged in power distribution companies, specifically the electrical technicians and equivalent manpower.

You are a stakeholder in the power industry, both as a consumer and as an employee or you may be aspiring to take up a job in the electrical industry. Therefore, you would surely welcome this opportunity of capacity building through a specially designed training programme.

Objective

The main objectives of this programme are to :

• Offer need based and tailor made academic programme for the specific need of Technicians/equivalent level workforce engaged in electricity sector;
• Train, assess and certify the skills and competencies of electrical technicians, and to make them eligible for acquiring further knowledge and skill development training / educational qualification;
• Provide better industrial education linkage by matching learner's educational needs while collaborating with professional bodies to meet the real work need;
• Provide educational programme aiming at increased job potential and economic activities.

Course Introduction:	Course deals with the various aspects of: Elementary Electrical and Exposure to Tools Electrical Earthing and System Protection Electrical Safety Measures We cannot imagine life without electricity. Today, almost every industry depends on the availability of electrical power. Not only do we depend on electricity for products for our consumption, our information and entertainment needs are entirely dependent on this. Our homes are comfortable because of this energy. To effectively use electricity, we need to understand it and our role as technical service provider, in this sector, makes it mandatory to learn and know this subject in depth. This course on ‘Electricity and Safety Measures’ is the first step in this direction. This course will introduce you to electricity, from generation to transmission to cities/ towns, to distribution up to the end user. You will learn the overview of electrical system and some of its important parts in the first part of this course. You shall also learn the general tools and tackle, which you will be using in your day-to-day work. All this will be introduced to you under the first part of this course : Elementary Electrical and Exposure to Tools (Block 1). While the use of electricity is a boon to us, its misuse can be a course, indeed, it could lead to major accidents, including fatal ones. Hence, we have to cautious. In practical sense, we need to provide for safe use of electricity. As we shall learn, earthing is the most important factor in this regard. Of course, earthing may also serve other purposes in the electrical system. Protection of the electrical equipment and the network is another safety measure, as it helps save not only our investment in the electrical system, but also, it may help prevent accidents related to electricity. You shall be introduced to ‘Earthing and Protection Systems’ in the second part of this course (Block 2). While we do take all precautions to avoid the unforeseen, what if some accident does happen? You need to be prepared to face this situation. You will be introduced to the basic safety measures. If an accident does happen, we need to look after the affected humans, and we need to ensure working of the electrical system. After all, lives may depend on urgent availability of electrical power. In regard to the affected humans, you shall learn about the essential First-Aid measures. Immediate First-Aid may save life. Hence, the importance of this subject. On the other side, it could be essential to restore the electrical system, at the earliest. This is the issue of Disaster Management. All these aspects are covered under the third part of this course, ‘Safety Measures’ (Block 3).
