Agriculture is still the backbone of the Indian economy providing livelihood, food security and employment to a large section of people. Much advancement is being made continuously in different sectors of agriculture. In the meantime, the climate changes have also created many new challenges to sustain agriculture in India. The conservation of resources and increasing farm income becomes a tough task, particularly in light of the changing climate scenario. Thus, to understand the complexities of agriculture and find solutions to emerging problems, it becomes important to understand the fundamentals of agriculture. The course “Basics of Agriculture” embodies six blocks covering various aspects that are the frame of Indian Agriculture.

The course aims to acquaint students with the Agricultural Credit Structure, Cooperative Credit Societies, Regional Rural Banks, Micro-finance, and other agencies. This will assist students in comprehending the Insurance Infrastructure. Overall, the course caters the need of students in understanding the comprehensive nuances in agricultural cost management systems. It highlights various dimensions of agriculture that includes agricultural research, extension education, agri input marketing, agricultural product procurement and management, role of cooperatives and contract farming, and agricultural based schemes, agricultural and its role in poverty reduction.

The cost concept helps farmers make informed decisions about their operations, leading to increased profitability and resource utilization. If any farmer wants to earn optimum profits, he or she must need to know about accounting, cost concepts and techniques. Therefore, this course discusses the different issues of financial and cost accounting relating to agriculture and also about various techniques of cost accounting. In the context of the cost accounting concept, you will learn about the concepts of different cost elements that can be applied to the agricultural farm. Specifically, these elements are materials, labour and overheads. After studying this course, you will be able to apply different cost techniques like job costing, batch costing, contract costing, process costing, marginal costing, budgetary controls, standard costing, target costing, and activity-based costing in agricultural farms. You will also be able to prepare cost sheets for agri farms. Besides that, you would also be able to make the farmers of our country aware of these cost concepts. In this course, you would be able to relate to some case studies.

In this context, the Course discusses the different issues of cost management in agriculture and various methods of managing the cost-related problems of any agri farm in our country. In the context of farm cost management, you will learn about the concepts of different cost management techniques and strategies that can be applied in the agricultural sector. Specifically, these are value chain analysis, supply chain analysis, logistics management, agri value sheet, variance analysis, risk management, agri planning etc. After studying this course, you will be able to apply these cost-control techniques to agricultural farms. Besides that, you would also be able to be awareof the farmers of our country.

The course explains how agriculture can be turned into agribusiness and how the farmer can become an entrepreneur. This course will discuss on entrepreneurial skills required for an agripreneur and will introduce you to the concept of agri-based micro & small enterprises, village development, agri waste management, agri marketing and agriculture laws. The course enables the learners to identify the opportunities available for agri startups in village and cottage industries and agro-based MSMEs. The course covers the concept of agri-waste management as an alternative business model. This course will give you an idea to market the agri products of the agri business both in the domestic market and international market. Finally, this course will introduce you to the agriculture laws and regulations required for successfully running of agri business.

India is an agrarian economy with more than 60% population surviving on agriculture and the majority of farmers being small and marginal. To give them the strength of collective bargaining and better management the concept of FPOs was evolved. In this course, we will study all practical aspects related to Farmer Producers Organizations and provisions related to their formation, management and sustainability. We will also learn about some success stories of high-performing FPOs in the fields of livestock, fruits and vegetables, cereals, millet, etc.
