PHDLS: Ph.D (Life Sciences)(PHD)

Introduction

The Ph.D. Programme is offered in compliance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of Ph.D Degrees) Regulations, and amendments thereto from time to time. IGNOU offers Ph.D programme under two categories: Part time and Full time. Both categories of students will be required to attend course work classes as per the IGNOU. The minimum and maximum duration of Ph.D programme is three years and six years respectively. The Women Candidates and Persons with Disabilities (40% or more / “severe” where percentage is not defined) are given two years extra beyond the maximum duration. The Ph.D. programme involves coursework during the first six months of admission, which will be conducted in IGNOU Campus at New Delhi only. A student has to attend the coursework on regular basis. At least 80 per cent attendance is compulsory. As of now, IGNOU does not have hostel facilities for students. Students have to make their own arrangements for stay in Delhi. The candidates, who are in employment and wish to pursue part time Ph.D shall obtain NOC from their respective employers in the prescribed format.

Objective

PhD in Life Sciences is an advanced academic program designed for individuals who are passionate about exploring the complexities of living organisms and the various biological processes that govern life. This interdisciplinary course encompasses a wide range of subjects, including molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of life at different scales. As the demand for innovative solutions to pressing global challenges—such as health crises, environmental sustainability, and food security—continues to rise, the role of life sciences professionals becomes increasingly vital. A PhD in this field empowers researchers to contribute to groundbreaking discoveries, develop new technologies, and influence public policy.
