Interactive Multimedia enabled IMNCI Package for Health Professionals- an NCIDE-SOHS collaboration Funded by UNICEF

IGNOU has developed a long-term innovative ICT enabled mechanism, to facilitate the initiatives of Govt. Of India, UNICEF and WHO, for providing a quality assured, dynamic, cost effective and accessible training of IMNCI through trainee centric pedagogic approach, and simple platform independent technology. The package has been developed in consultation with various experts from Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Maulana Azad Medical College. The interactive multimedia rich virtual training scenario in an interactive way automatically guides the learner how to proceed between sections. Each topic of the training module consists of built-in textual descriptions, animations, explanations of filling the form through animations, images, videos, learning opportunities, and self evaluations to facilitate the learner learn better. This package covers the complete face-to-face training schedule in an algorithmic approach except bed-side teaching. The packaged is launched and caters the need to train the doctors in IMNCI approach, re-orient the doctors trained in IMNCI and sensitize the health personnel about IMNCI.

Pilot Testing and Online Package on IMNCI- an NCIDE-SOHS collaboration Funded by UNICEF

IMNCI online portal has been developed with the latest web technologies. It is accessible from desktop computers to hand held devices including mobile devices. As a collaborative learning system this can be used for and within various clusters of health professionals and health workers who can interact, share, collaborate and learn anytime anywhere. This platform facilitates the fresh trainees as well as master trainers. It has various modules for complete management of courses and learners like site management, user management, enrolment, Roles, course management, assignment, module, chat module, choice module, forum module, glossary module, lesson module, quiz module, workshop module wiki module, survey module, resource module etc. The System is ready for use for the IMNCI master trainers and trainees to undergo training virtually. This system can also be used as an Online Certification System for providing training and certification to the IMNCI trainees.

Development of a Bilingual IDVD enabled and Mobile Supported IMNCI Training package for Health Workers-An NCIDE-SOHS Collaboration funded by UNICEF

Training of health workers holds the key for practice of IMNCI at household/village level. But the large number of health workers and the lengthy training process requiring displacement from workplace is delaying the training goal of 100% coverage. IGNOU in collaboration with UNICEF is trying to make the training process of health workers for the IMNCI component more effective by using blended learning and integrating interactive DVD and mobile technology in the training process for distributive learners. It is anticipated that use of local language and playing DVD through TV sets at home/ training venue could make the learning feasible and interesting. Due to universal use of mobile phone, using it for accessing IMNCI chart-book during house-hold visits could be very useful for health workers. This could help for actual practice of IMNCI in the long run. In the long run the package could easily be adapted for different local languages as per need.
Science @Mobile - An Innovative Scheme of Science Popularisation

In order to exploit the potential of the fast spreading mobile technology in the country, the National Centre for Innovations in Distance Education (NCIDE) in IGNOU in collaboration with Vigyan Prasar (Department of Science and Technology) Govt. of India has started “Science @Mobile - an innovative scheme of science popularisation through mobile. The Target Group for the Science @ Mobile, basically includes all the people irrespective of age, gender, socio-economic background, geographical location The basic objectives of the scheme are:
  • To exploit the potential of mobile phones for science popularisation in the society,
  • To spread the scientific knowledge including science news and updates among the people through mobile service,
  • To create an awareness about the health, energy and environmental issues of common interest in the society through mobile devices,
  • To create interest among the people towards science and hence to develop a scientifically empowered society in India.
In the first phase of the scheme eight different types of sms items are being delivered through mobiles which include interesting science facts, science quotations, latest science news, about scientists, science humour, health tips, green tips, and events and days of scientific importance.

The scheme of Science @Mobile has certain innovative features which include no fee for subscribing science SMS and it can be subscribed through mobile as well as through computer from anywhere and anytime. Another features is that the people have the option to select what type of information they would like to receive on their mobile as per your choice and interest also they can select the frequency of receiving the sms i.e. daily or weekly. There is provision of getting feedback from the subscribers. Subscriber has also the option to unsubscribe the service anytime from anywhere.
