Updated on 10 Jan, 2020

In order to promote the culture of innovation among the students and create an ecosystem for innovation in the University, NCIDE has taken up various initiatives including identifying student innovation, organizing idea competition and mentoring, supporting and guiding the students to innovate and generate new ideas and convert them into prototypes through workshops and training programmes, etc. Besides, NCIDE has been encouraging students to participate in various programmes and competitions on innovation organized by other agencies such as AIU, MHRD, etc. Some of such initiatives are given below :
Idea Competition
In order to generate new and innovative ideas as different issues and problems faced by the society in different areas, IGNOU organized an Idea Competition. For the Idea Competition, several students had submitted their original and creative ideas, which can solve the problems of daily life in the fields of Food, Agriculture and Rural Development, Clean Energy and Alternate Fuel, Clean Water and Water Management, Swacchhata Initiatives and Waste Management, Health Care and Hygiene, Education and Open University System, Smart Transportation and Traffic Management. Before the Festival, these ideas were evaluated and selected on the basis of their novelty, complexity, clarity and details, feasibility, practicability, sustainability, scale of impact, cost effectiveness and future prospects, etc. The selected students were invited to participate and present their ideas in the Festival of Ideas organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), NCIDE, for its students on February 28 and March 01, 2019 at IGNOU, New Delhi. In this Festival, the selected ideas were showcased and the best three innovative ideas of the IGNOU students were given Best Idea Award. For more details Click here
Festival of Ideas
The first Festival of Ideas was organised by the National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education (NCIDE) under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) on February 28 and March 01, 2019 at IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. Identifying Innovator Students
NCIDE is making all efforts to identify, recognize and nurture the innovators in the open and distance learning (ODL) system. Considering the students to be the most important stakeholders of the ODL system, the university has formulated a scheme for identifying, recognizing and supporting the innovator students of IGNOU. Under this scheme, IGNOU identifies innovator students from different parts of the country and they are given expert guidance and support by the team of experts. From 2018 an incentive in the form of Student Innovation Award has been included with this scheme. For this purpose, entries are invited by the NCIDE from IGNOU students for the Student Innovation Award. After the evaluation by a Committee of experts, the three best entries are selected for the Award.
First time, the University awarded its student innovators with Student Innovation Award on the occasion of its Foundation Day on November 19, 2018. This is now an annual event of the University. The selected innovators are further supported and mentored for commercialization of their innovation and to convert the innovation into start up, if possible. For more details Click here
In order to inculcate research and innovation culture among the students in Higher Education Institutions, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has been organizing a Student Research Convention named Anveshan every year. For encouraging IGNOU students to participate in the Anveshan – Student Research Convention, NCIDE invited projects from its students. Five best projects scrutinized and recommended by a Committee were sent to participate in the Zonal Level Convention held at NIFTEM, Sonipat on January 16, 2019. The Research Proposals were evaluated on the basis of seven parameters including Scientific Thoughts and Principles, Creativity, Thoroughness, Skill, Relevance, Cost Effectiveness and Team Work. Smart India Hackathon
NCIDE encouraged, motivated and guided interested IGNOU students to participate in the Smart India Hackathon initiative (SIH) organized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and AICTE in association with i4c and Persistent Systems. This was a unique Open Innovation Model for identifying new and disruptive technology innovations to solve the challenges faced in our country. As the event was related to Computer Sciences, the School of Computer Sciences was also requested to inform and mobilise its students to participate in this initiative. Out of the identified/ interested students, 6 teams were constituted as per the SIH guidelines. In consultation with SOCIS, NCIDE facilitated the teams in registration and submission of their ideas and proposals as IGNOU’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC). For more details Click here
