Promoting Student Innovations

In order to promote the culture of innovation among the students and create an ecosystem for innovation in the University, NCIDE has taken up various initiatives including identifying student innovation, organizing idea competition and mentoring, supporting and guiding the students to innovate and generate new ideas and convert them into prototypes through workshops and training programmes, etc. Besides, NCIDE has been encouraging students to participate in various programmes and competitions on innovation organized by other agencies such as AIU, MHRD, etc. Some of such initiatives are given below :
 
Idea to Startup Scheme
In order to promote, support and nurture the innovator students of IGNOU interested in setting up their startups, the University has initiated a scheme of “Idea to Startup” for its students. Any student of IGNOU who has developed a prototype or innovative product or system based on new, socially relevant and practicable ideas on the themes viz. food and agriculture, rural development, clean energy and alternate fuel, clean water and water management, swachhta initiatives and waste management, health care and hygiene, smart transportation and traffic management, smart city and urban development, social issues and security system, technological innovation and education and Open University system can apply. Yukti 2.0 Portal
YUKTI 2.0 is an initiative of MHRD's innovation cell and All India Council for Technical Education. It is focused on creating a national database of technologies and innovations along with their commercialization potential and also the startups from our academic institutes. This is an initiative towards encouraging students, faculty and startups from all Higher Education Institutes to submit their innovation and technology to the Government of India. IGNOU has also joined this initiative and taking steps to identify and encourage students, faculty and startups from University to submit their innovation and technology on this portal.
 
Appnovate-2020
As a step towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat, IGNOU announced a University Level Innovation Challenge – AppNnovate IGNOU for IGNOU students and Alumni. The aim was to promote App development among IGNOU students and motivate students in this direction. A total of eleven Apps were shortlisted by an Expert Committee on the basis of the innovativeness, novelty, ease of use, robustness, security features, scalability and storage space required for the app. These shortlisted proposals have been submitted for participation in the National level App innovation Contest. The best three Innovative Apps of the university level challenge were awarded with the Certificates of Merits and case prizes by the university.  For more information click here. 
 
IGNOU’s Initiative towards Atmanirbhar Bharat: Online Training on Student Empowerment for Entrepreneurial Development (SEED)
NCIDE, IGNOU has started an eleven-day online training programme titled “Student Empowerment for Entrepreneurial Development (SEED)” for IGNOU students as IGNOU’s Initiative towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the Prime Minister of India called for Atmanirbhar Bharat or Self-Reliant India Movement. This scenario calls for entrepreneurship, especially among the youth of the country and IGNOU took this initiative to empower its students for Atmanirbhar Bharat through this training programme from 27 July to 21 August 2020. Creativity Challenge Series
In order to foster the culture of creativity and innovation among IGNOU students and staff during this period, the National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education (NCIDE) visualized a series of Creativity Challenges for them. The basic objectives of the Creativity Challenges were to promote creativity and innovation among IGNOU students and staff, including faculty; to gainfully engage them in the creative and innovative activities during the lockdown period and to encourage them to learn some new and innovative skills useful for them. Smart IGNOU Hackathon-2020
In order to promote the culture of innovation and out-of-the-box thinking among young minds, The NCIDE at IGNOU organized the Smart IGNOU Hackathon-2020 as an internal Hackathon for its students, from January 17-20, 2020. The MHRD’s Innovation Cell (MIC) and AICTE have launched the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2020, which is a nation-wide product development competition, where problem statements are posed to students for innovative solutions. The student teams selected in the Internal Hackathon will be participating in Smart India Hackathon 2020 to be organised by the MHRD and AICTE. For more information click here. 
 
Student Innovation and Startup Day - 2019
In order to inculcate the spirit of innovation among students, IGNOU IIC and NCIDE in collaboration with IGNOU Regional Centre Delhi-2 celebrated the ‘Student Innovation and Start-up Day’ on 15th October 2019 at IGNOU Regional Centre Delhi-2, Rajghat, New Delhi. On the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Former President of India, this programme was organised as a tribute to a visionary and great son of India. About hundred participants including IGNOU students, Coordinators/Programme In-Charges of IGNOU Study Centres of Delhi NCR and the staff members of NCIDE and Regional Centre Delhi-2 attended the programme. Idea Competition
In order to generate new and innovative ideas as different issues and problems faced by the society in different areas, IGNOU organized an Idea Competition. For the Idea Competition, several students had submitted their original and creative ideas, which can solve the problems of daily life in the fields of Food, Agriculture and Rural Development, Clean Energy and Alternate Fuel, Clean Water and Water Management, Swacchhata Initiatives and Waste Management, Health Care and Hygiene, Education and Open University System, Smart Transportation and Traffic Management. Before the Festival, these ideas were evaluated and selected on the basis of their novelty, complexity, clarity and details, feasibility, practicability, sustainability, scale of impact, cost effectiveness and future prospects, etc. The selected students were invited to participate and present their ideas in the Festival of Ideas organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), NCIDE, for its students on February 28 and March 01, 2019 at IGNOU, New Delhi. In this Festival, the selected ideas were showcased and the best three innovative ideas of the IGNOU students were given Best Idea Award. For more details Click here
 
Festival of Ideas
The first Festival of Ideas was organised by the National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education (NCIDE) under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) on February 28 and March 01, 2019 at IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. The objectives were to recognize, share, nurture and promote the ideas of the students of IGNOU. For this Festival, ideas of the IGNOU students were invited from all over India on the different themes.
 
Besides usual display and presentation of ideas by the student, in the form of an exhibition for two days, these students were given special training and guidance through special workshops and training sessions by the experts on refining the ideas, developing business plan for converting the ideas into prototype and innovation. Identifying Innovator Students
NCIDE is making all efforts to identify, recognize and nurture the innovators in the open and distance learning (ODL) system. Considering the students to be the most important stakeholders of the ODL system, the university has formulated a scheme for identifying, recognizing and supporting the innovator students of IGNOU. Under this scheme, IGNOU identifies innovator students from different parts of the country and they are given expert guidance and support by the team of experts. From 2018 an incentive in the form of Student Innovation Award has been included with this scheme. For this purpose, entries are invited by the NCIDE from IGNOU students for the Student Innovation Award. After the evaluation by a Committee of experts, the three best entries are selected for the Award.
 
First time, the University awarded its student innovators with Student Innovation Award on the occasion of its Foundation Day on November 19, 2018. This is now an annual event of the University. The selected innovators are further supported and mentored for commercialization of their innovation and to convert the innovation into start up, if possible. For more details Click here
 
Anveshan
In order to inculcate research and innovation culture among the students in Higher Education Institutions, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has been organizing a Student Research Convention named Anveshan every year. For encouraging IGNOU students to participate in the Anveshan – Student Research Convention, NCIDE invited projects from its students. Five best projects scrutinized and recommended by a Committee were sent to participate in the Zonal Level Convention held at NIFTEM, Sonipat on January 16, 2019. The Research Proposals were evaluated on the basis of seven parameters including Scientific Thoughts and Principles, Creativity, Thoroughness, Skill, Relevance, Cost Effectiveness and Team Work. Smart India Hackathon-2019
NCIDE encouraged, motivated and guided interested IGNOU students to participate in the Smart India Hackathon initiative (SIH) organized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and AICTE in association with i4c and Persistent Systems. This was a unique Open Innovation Model for identifying new and disruptive technology innovations to solve the challenges faced in our country. As the event was related to Computer Sciences, the School of Computer Sciences was also requested to inform and mobilise its students to participate in this initiative. Out of the identified/ interested students, 6 teams were constituted as per the SIH guidelines. In consultation with SOCIS, NCIDE facilitated the teams in registration and submission of their ideas and proposals as IGNOU’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC). For more details Click here
