The country is witnessing a media revolution resulting in a massive expansion of media in general and digital media in particular. With the rapid development in Information and Communication Technology, Journalism and New Media are emerging as powerful communication tools to reach large sections of society. This has opened up tremendous professional opportunities and has resulted in the need for trained human resources in the industry, academia, and research. Accordingly, the University established the School of Journalism and New Media Studies (SOJNMS) in 2007.
The SOJNMS has opted for a judicial blend of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online programmes. The mix of online and ODL programmes enables the School to reach out to all segments of society - nationally and internationally. The programmes offered by the School range from diplomas to degrees and doctoral programmes. While diploma programmes help upgrade the skills of media and media-related professionals, degree programmes prepare students for entry-level jobs. Doctoral programmes enable the School to undertake academic research and utilise its findings to enrich the learning experience.
The School draws upon an eminent panel of media professionals to expose the learners to the realities of the media world after a thorough theoretical grounding by the faculty members. Working in tandem, these teams of in-house faculty, experts and academic counsellors provide the learners with a holistic learning experience.
Currently, the School offers MA degrees and PG Diploma programmes (Journalism and Mass Communication, Digital Media, Electronic Media, Development Journalism, Advertising and Integrated Communication and Media and Information Literacy) and a bachelor's degree (Journalism and Digital Media) under a four-year undergraduate programme.
Vision:
The SOJNMS aspires to offer competent media professionals, in-depth researchers, and effective communicators to the national and international society. The School strives to be a par excellence in the emerging media and communication disciplines at the national and international levels. The School would like to pursue excellence in research, pedagogy, scholarship, and creative activity in the emerging fields of media and communication, such as journalism, digital media, electronic media, development journalism and AD & PR. The aim is to educate and serve society as a public institution by engaging in critical, theoretical, practical, and scholarly/creative activity.
Mission:
The SOJNMS continuously develops and upgrades to create high-quality, ethically strong learning material for the media and communication discipline. The School professionally conducts intellectual and analytical research to achieve higher standards in communication studies. The SOJNMS reinvents itself to offer academic programmes of co-curricular, extracurricular, and internship activities to help students understand the role of discipline in society. The School aim to raise graduates with well-rounded skills, knowledge, critical thinking, and media theorists/practitioners.
Two decades of journey of SOJNMS in a brief capsule:
Amidst the media boom, particularly online and social media, communication and its tools have become necessary for many of our routine functions. Also, powerful media systems are prominent in our system and significantly influence our lives. Besides that, the media communication industry is a massive platform which provides sizable career opportunities. Media and communication systems are omnipresent and attract people from all walks of life. Communication is an art form that can play many roles depending on the situation: informing, learning, entertaining, influencing, and convincing. Lately, this system has converged with technological tools. We learn a lot from media and communication systems, and participation in them requires some sort of training. At SOJNMS, we have stitched an academic platform that addresses the abovementioned scenarios. We have degrees for working professionals, our academic programmes facilitate the start of a new career for others, and media studies help someone to understand the communication process. Media amuses all ages, and our programmes cater to all age groups. Our academic programmes also aim to help individuals whose education was denied, stopped, missed and skipped to pursue a career of their choice in the media industry/field. IGNOU is known for creating trends, and true to the University’s footsteps, SOJNMS have made significant strides in the field of media education. And more importantly, we are offering academic programmes of higher quality standards at affordable costs. Welcome to the world of media education through lifelong learning mode - i.e. SOJNMS.
