The School of Humanities (SOH) was established with a vision to promote humanistic values, critical thinking, and cultural understanding through quality education in various disciplines of humanities offered via Online, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
Vision:
To make humanities education available to all by blending tradition with innovation, nurturing creativity and critical inquiry.
Mission:
To enhance learners’ understanding of language, literature, culture, philosophy and to empower them with analytical and communicative skills that contribute to personal growth and social harmony through Online, Open and Distance Learning.

School of Humanities (SOH) currently comprises four disciplines — English, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu — supported by a team of distinguished faculty members. It offers programmes through ODL mode and through Online mode, complemented by MOOCs on the SWAYAM platform and one SWAYAM Prabha Channel, thereby strengthening IGNOU’s digital and broadcast-based outreach.
The school regularly organizes academic lectures, Seminars, workshops, and research initiatives that promote interdisciplinary engagement and deepen the appreciation of language, literature, and culture among learners across India and beyond.,

Objectives:

  • To strengthen human resources in the field of humanities through Open and Distance Learning (ODL), Online, SWAYAM, and SWAYAM Prabha platforms.
  • To provide equitable and quality education in languages, literature, culture, philosophy, and allied disciplines to marginalized and disadvantaged groups.
  • To promote creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness among learners for holistic intellectual and personal development.
  • To enhance knowledge, communication skills, and analytical abilities for employment, research, and lifelong learning.
  • To integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for improving the outreach, accessibility, and effectiveness of humanities education through distance and online modes.
  • To undertake research and innovation in emerging areas of humanities, focusing on interdisciplinary and comparative studies.
  • To establish national and international linkages for academic exchange, collaborative research, and dissemination of knowledge in humanities.
  • To develop and maintain an open repository of educational resources in humanities for global learners through digital and online platforms.
  • The School of Humanities had its genesis in the 8th meeting of the Board of Management, held on 20th May 1988. The mandate of the school was to develop and offer academic programmes not only in English and Hindi but also in other Indian languages, thereby promoting the larger vision and mission of the University. Presently, the School comprises four disciplines: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, and Urdu.
Over the years, the School of Humanities has designed and developed a wide range of academic programmes, including Ph.D. Coursework, Master’s Degree Programmes in Hindi, English, Sanskrit and Urdu; Bachelor’s Degree Programmes in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, and Urdu; as well as several Diploma and Certificate Programmes.
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the promotion of Indian languages and the significance of the mother tongue, the school recognizes that Indian culture lives in its languages. To preserve and promote our cultural heritage, it is imperative to nurture and strengthen our linguistic traditions.

The School of Humanities (SOH) has been a vibrant centre of learning and cultural engagement since its inception. Over the years, the school has expanded its academic vision in response to the dynamic intellectual, linguistic, and cultural shifts shaping our society.
Through its programmes in English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and other Indian Languages, the School has made quality education accessible to learners across India and beyond via Open and Distance Learning (ODL), Online platforms, and MOOCs on SWAYAM and SWAYAM Prabha. With a broad spectrum of certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes, the school equips learners, teachers, writers and researchers alike—with the skills to think, communicate, and create meaningfully.
The school is committed to fostering inclusive interdisciplinary studies, digital learning innovations, and national and international collaborations that strengthen the role of humanities in shaping human consciousness and collective growth.
    Thank you and best wishes.
    With regards,
    Prof. Smita Chaturvedi,
    Director, School of Humanities
